Recorded in 1998 at MAV Studios with producer Pat McAtee, Alter Ego captures The Sound and the Fury at the beginning of its journey. Building on two earlier demo releases, the album marked the band's first full-length studio effort and documented the youthful ambition, energy, and determination that would define the years to come.
Featuring early fan favorites such as "The Earthquake's Revenge" and "Bottle Magic," Alter Ego showcases a band discovering its identity while blending powerful melodies, dynamic arrangements, and deeply personal songwriting. Tracks like "Us Against Them" reflect the frustrations, setbacks, broken promises, and hard lessons learned from navigating the music industry, making the album as autobiographical as it is ambitious.
Recorded during the early days of the lineup featuring Jeff Wood, Aaron Ogle, John Floyd Whitaker, and Jay Kassen, the album also began a creative relationship with producer Pat McAtee that continues to come full circle today through bassist Mike McAtee, Pat's son, who now holds down the low end for TSATF.
While the band's songwriting, performances, and production have continued to evolve over the decades, the passion and authenticity captured on Alter Ego remain timeless. Listen closely and you may even discover the hidden track, "Valentine Present," a surprise that not every fan knows exists.
